One-to-one diet and nutrition support for anyone diagnosed with cancer.

A one-off online session (about one hour, although I never cut anyone short) can be arranged to support health and wellbeing through and beyond cancer treatment. We can also unpick myths around diet and your type of cancer.

I regularly provide these for free, but if you aren't comfortable with that, you may contribute anything up to a maximum of £100.

Also, see below for information about my regular group cancer prevention sessions.

Having had breast cancer myself, I understand and can empathise with the fear of whether eating and drinking certain things could increase risk of recurrence. I also relate to the desire to take some control over your own health. I understand the confusion too - diet and nutrition for cancer patients is a minefield of misinformation. It’s particularly difficult to navigate when feeling emotionally vulnerable.

When considering diet after a cancer diagnosis, you may be concerned about what to eat during cancer treatment, or perhaps which foods to avoid while on chemo, or whether certain foods increase the risk of cancer coming back.

I will help you unpick all things diet and cancer and ultimately move towards food freedom.

The most frequent word I hear in feedback from these one-to-one cancer support sessions is RELIEF. Understanding what you don’t need to worry about is just as important as understanding what you do need to consider.

“You selflessly supported me when I was at my lowest, and I trusted you and respected your words as it really did make a difference to get some help from someone who was both highly knowledgeable and who had lived experience.”

Working as the Registered Nutritionist at Weston Park Hospital Charity since 2019, I have built a wealth of experience with primary and secondary cancer clients. This allows me to give useful, practical advice, not only about how to improve prognosis after a primary cancer diagnosis, but also about living well with stage 4 cancer. Whatever your circumstances, I can support you to maximise health and wellbeing through and beyond treatment.

Eating well can help with managing treatment side effects. Nutrition plays an important role in supporting the immune system, maximising energy levels, improving mental health and reducing many gut-related side effects of treatment. These benefits are so important at a difficult time.

“I without doubt can’t recommend Helen enough to anyone struggling with food and fatigue due to a cancer diagnosis. She has given me ideas and information I can put into my daily life which will help lessen some of the side effects I’m struggling with. I can’t explain what a difference it’s made having you in my corner, thanks again.”

Trustworthy, continually updated, evidence based information can be found from the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF). I highly recommend their website for information about cancer prevention as well as for cancer patients. Please check anything with the WCRF here before you believe what you hear, however well meaning it sounds.

I can personally recommend Breast Cancer Now to primary and secondary breast cancer patients. I attended one of their events for younger women, diagnosed under age 45 and made two lifelong and very special friends in the process. They have a wealth of fantastic support services, take a look here.

Cancer Prevention Group Sessions

Doesn't everyone want to reduce their risk of cancer?

You'd think so..... around 50% of us will have a cancer diagnosis at some point in our lives. Scientists estimate that around 40% of these cases are preventable by lifestyle changes. After smoking, diet is the biggest factor that can reduce your chances of a cancer diagnosis. Two of the most common cancers, bowel and breast, are significantly impacted by dietary factors.

I am absolutely dedicated to doing pro bono cancer nutrition sessions, to spread awareness of how diet can influence cancer prevention. I offer complimentary online workshops on a regular basis.

See below for the next date. Please come along, it could be the best money you didn’t spend!

I will not be suggesting any radical dietary changes, or telling you what you should or shouldn’t eat. I’ll be suggesting some lifestyle tweaks that will decrease your risk if you wish to do that. I'll also give you ideas about how to build the scientific evidence into real and busy lives.

Of course, it's up to you whether you change anything at all, you may simply come away reassured that you’re on the right lines! For many people, it’s understanding what you don’t need to worry about.
